Nonprofit, high-tech. The GIS Center is a nonprofit operation dedicated to assisting government
agencies (especially local governments) and nonprofit organizations in
their utilization of geographic information systems (GIS) and related technologies.
We are part of the Stony Brook–Millstone
Watershed Association, a regional environmental organization in Central New Jersey,
but we provide assistance to organizations throughout the state.
(What is GIS?)
GIS can be useful to all kinds of organizations. The hitch is that it's tough to
do GIS a little bit. If you have enough demand for it, you get the stuff you need and you
hire the people you need, and you're off. But small organizations often have trouble reaching the critical
mass that's necessary to keep GIS going. Part-time GIS users working and learning on their own
can get a lot of things done but eventually run into
roadblocks. Invariably something comes up—a puzzler of a question or a
step that requires special hardware or software—that requires outside assistance.
And with nobody to learn from or bounce ideas off of, it's easy to run into problems that
can be very time-consuming to figure out.
That's where The GIS Center comes in. We've assembled equipment, software, and staff expertise
to be able to handle GIS projects of all types. Read more about what we have to offer, and
please contact us if we can help you get where you're going.
