The GIS Center at Stony Brook

Welcome! The GIS Center is dedicated to assisting government agencies (especially local governments) and nonprofit organizations in their utilization of geographic information systems (GIS) and related technologies. We provide expertise to organizations that are initiating their own in-house GIS operations and conduct GIS-related projects for those that have no GIS capability of their own. Read more about us.

Our site map will help you find your way around if you are confused. You can also use the search form at the bottom of each page to search for particular content on our sites.

Using GIS to Manage Open Space
The Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP) articulates a community’s vision of open space and recreation opportunities and serves as a framework for implementation. This workshop will highlight how mapping and data analysis play an integral role in updating and completing the OSRP for both rural and urban communities. Presenters will highlight inventory and assessment mapping applications, youth-based initiatives to collect data for incorporation in your town or organization’s plan, and promotion using interactive web-based mapping for public participation and enjoyment.

Presenters:
Janel Bisacquino – Director, GIS Center at Stony Brook  OSRP & GIS presentation
Tarren Anderson – GIS Director, Hopeworks ‘N Camden
Wansoo Im, Ph.D. – Director, Center for Community Mapping

GIS Roundtable Discussion
Share and learn about resources to enhance your organization’s use of Geographic Information Systems and network with GIS professionals. The roundtable session will focus on future projects in development around the state and provide an opportunity to convey your GIS data needs to some of the geospatial data production agencies and companies in the region. This opportunity is offered to enhance your organization’s information management and delivery to better accomplish your mission. This workshop is an extension of the NJ Nonprofit GIS Community.

Presenters:
Janel Bisacquino – Director, GIS Center at Stony Brook
Dom Elefante – GIS Manager, Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute
Peter Winkler – GIS Specialist, NJDEP Landscape Project
Tarren Anderson – GIS Director, Hopeworks ‘N Camden
Wansoo Im, Ph.D. – Director, Center for Community Mapping

Aerial Photos on the Interactive Maps

We've added aerial photos as a layer to our interactive map site. Check it out!

We've also added another new feature to the interactive maps: the ability for you to find a location by entering a street address. There are maps for each of the municipalities in the Millstone Watershed that also show state plan areas, land use, critical habitat, and other environmental information. You can zoom in on an area you want, choose which map layers you want to see, and print it out if you like. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
